Tips and Tricks to Writing a Good Job Ad
Writing a job ad is like writing any other advertisement, but you need to be a little crafty. Know your target audience, offer them what they would like and address them in a language they best understand. There’s nothing worse than writing a job ad and placing it online and running it in a local newspaper and receiving no responses or responses from people who aren’t suitable for the position you want to fill. Seek to improve the quality of your responsesby having a well-writtenad.
- Start with a catchy job title
This is the first thing that hits the mind of an applicant. Make sure the title is appealing and convincing to the mindof the reader. A catchy job title is the first impression, andit should be amazingenough to captivate the applicant. The job title should be clear and should not in any way deceive or mislead the reader.
- Be specific about the job
Being particular allows the applicant to compare their skills and experience with what is required. It also discourages the unqualified from not applying. Incorporate two or three bullet points that contain eye-catching benefits and incentives associated with the job position. Salary is often the best one. Others might include in facility parking; team lunch provided on specific days, etc.
- Differentiate between the must-havequalifications and skills and the nice to have ones
If there are any essential qualifications required, put a lot of emphasis on that. Make sure you differentiate between the must-have qualifications and the added advantage ones.
- Avoid exaggeration
When a job adsounds too good to be true, you risk getting applications from unrealistic and gullible non-performers. The seriousand qualified people on this might dismiss the advertterming it fictitious. Keep it simple to avoid wasting time with unqualified applicants.
- Offer challenges not direct rewards
You might think offering rewards will attract the right kind of person but it won’t. Offer challenges, andit attracts ambitious, passionate and self-driven people to fill the position. Rewards will get you someone who is in for a smoothride.
- Briefly tell them about your company
Describe the company but not in too manydetails. Don’t get the reader all excited about the company and have no attachment tothe role they are applying for. The company is a bonus, but you simply want a person who can handle the job in question. Select the core values, core competencies and the relevant success measures of the company and include them, this eliminates applicants not suitable for the role.
- Provide a phone number
A prospective candidate might want to know more about the job and other things. Thiscan help you eliminate unsuitable and unqualified candidates as early as possible. There’s a lot you can learn from a candidate over the phone.
- Write a good short description
Most people read the brief description and decide whether to click on the ad or not. Put effort intowhat you are writing. Captivate the mind of the reader and prompt them to click on the ad and read it in its entirety.
